14th December 2011
BBC REPORTING SCOTLAND
Following a recent e-mail
sent by Graham to the BBC regarding DCGR’s 10th birthday, he was interviewed by BBC Scotland radio news and
additionally, Willie Johnston (Reporting Scotland’s south west correspondent) attended at Kirkgunzeon to film and interview
Graham and his pack. Thereafter, he attended at Chris and Brian’s house in New Galloway and completed an interview
there. When DCGR started 10 years ago, Willie Johnston did a piece for us then. There have been many changes since then
– name change, committee changes, financial changes as well as having re-homed over 755 greyhounds, not to mention the
charity shop. The piece is scheduled to be broadcast on Tuesday 27th December but is dependent on what breaking
news there is at that time. This is the start of DCGR’s 10th anniversary celebrations so keep watching
the website to see what Graham has planned.

DUNSCORE CRAFT FAIR – 22ND OCTOBER – DUNSCORE VILLAGE HALL
This was a unique occasion, as the Craft Fair in Dunscore was arranged
specifically to donate the proceeds to DCGR. Prior to travelling to Castle Douglas for the Meet a Greyhound Day, Graham drove
Margaret (and Poppy) and all the “goodies” to Dunscore and was soon joined by our Vice Chair, Ann with Tiffiy.
Margaret has been squirreling away donations for the charity shop all year and bringing them out at this time for Christmas
present. She took some to this event and the remainder will be sold in the charity shop and at our own Christmas Fair
on the 26th November. There were plenty of stalls at the fair and we think along with Alison the chutney lady,
we may have been the busiest. Certainly Poppy and Tiffy were 2 of the main attractions. For those attending our show,
we have invited Alison and her jams and chutneys to come along. Nearly £35 was raised by our stall (it was a little
quiet) although we believe that the event itself raised £150 and this will also be coming to DCGR.

MEET
A GREYHOUND DAY - 22ND OCTOBER - TESCO, CASTLE DOUGLAS

Although rain was forecast, it stayed
off until we were packing up for the day about 3.30. It's probably the longest we have ever stayed at a supermarket (10am
till 3.30pm) but it was well worth it. The people of Castle Douglas were extremely generous and a good turn out of members
and their greyhounds ensured plenty of smiles from Tesco's customers. At the peak, we had over 12 greyhounds all resplendent
in their winter coats (it was a little chilly) and for the uninitiated, it must have been some sight with 12 greyhounds in
coats of green, red, blue, maroon and black - talk about Joseph and his "multi coloured coat!!! Anyway, a few leaflets
were handed out to potential adopters and a couple from Edinburgh who were holidaying near Kirkcudbright, popped down to view
Minnie, one of our homeless dogs. Over £70 was raised in the time we were there and wew are extrmely grateful to Tesco
for allowing us to visit. Pictures show Brian, Rosemary and John outside the store and one of Cassie and
Molly having a rest. Graham never identifies anyone specifically to thank at these avents as it is a "team"
effort but special mention must be made of Rosemary who despite feeling unwell and in pain from an arm injury, came along
and stayed almost the whole day and of course Brian, whose enthusiasm at the age of 103 put the rest of us to shame.

NEWINGTON WI
(ANNAN) – TALK ON GREYHOUND RESCUE An
early start for Graham and Margaret on Tuesday 6th September as they first did a full day at the Charity Shop in
Lockerbie before travelling to Annan to give a talk on Greyhound Rescue to the ladies of Newington WI. All day it was
torrential rain even when they arrived in Annan and possibly this had an affect on the number of ladies in the audience. Having
said that, approx 25 ladies listened intently to Graham as he recounted the successes of DCGR and when he mentioned the charity
shop and how successful it had been, there was a spontaneous round of applause. For those regular readers, you will know that
as Graham talks, Margaret sets up a small sales table before bringing in the greyhounds at the end of the presentation. True
to form, Poppy and Molly entered the hall to many oohs and aahs before trotting off to the kitchen to “examine”
the home baking and sandwiches. Graham says he hasn’t see Margaret move so fast for a long time!!DCGR would like to
thank Newington WI for the invite, their hospitality and donations totalling £32

HOUGHTON HALL MEET A GREYHOUND
WEEKEND SAT/SUN 3RD/4TH SEPTEMBER
"A weekend
of 2 days!!!" Graham and Margaret arrived at Houghton Hall Garden Centre on the Saturday during really
persistent rain and set up the information table, settling down for a really miserable day. They were soon joined by Sue Neale,
Pauline Askew, Arthur and Carlisle regulars Audrey and Wendy. Soon after Glynis and Ruth arrived as well as Malcolm and Yvonne. Luckily, the staff at Houghton Hall
felt sorry for us and brought out a gazebo for us (or was it the dogs??). We had all the adults and 11 greyhounds in a 3m
x 3m gazebo - a new world record? Even although it was wet and miserable, plenty folk came along to say hello and we raised
a creditable £154. The "rainy" pictures are those from the Saturday. What a difference
on the Sunday when Graham and Margaret arrived and set up in glorious sunshine. The good weather certainly brought out our
members and Graham counted 17 greyhounds at the peak. Once again, customers to the garden centre were very generous and DCGR
raised over £217 on the Sunday. The Sunday pictures show a team photograph (split into 2 as so many were there) including Aaron from Houghton Hall who was extremely helpful to our
charity both days. A big thank you to Houghton Hall Garden Centre and all members who travelled to the venue, making it such
a success.

Keswick Meet a Greyhound Day Monday 29th August Well the weather for a Bank Holiday Monday was to say the least indifferent! We did get a couple of seconds of
sunshine, but the day was cold and windy and at 2.30pm the heavens opened, at which point, as we had no shelter we packed
up and left. However despite only being there for four and a half hours we made over £245 and perhaps more importantly
had several really good homing enquiries, which will hopefully result in some desperately needed homes! Our thanks go to members
Sue with foster dog Inch and Brenda with her greyhound Minnie, who were waiting for our arrival and who both worked hard
all day helping us to answer enquiries about the greyhounds. The picture shows our 'stand' with Sue, Al and Brenda
talking to visitors.

MEET A GREYHOUND WEEKEND - ASDA, CARLISLE - SAT 27th & SUN 28TH AUGUST Really good weather although a chill wind, ensured that customers to Asda were met by some really happy greyhounds
and their owners at our now annual Meet a Greyhound Weekend in Carlisle. The Saturday especially was very good and DCGR had
plenty of greyhounds on display including new Long Term Foster Dog - Bel. Graham arrived about 9.30 on the Saturday and even
as he was setting up, customers were throwing coins into the tins. One shopper (didn't get her name)was so impressed that
she held onto Molly as Graham set up the table and even gave a couple of pounds donation. At about 3.30, it started to rain
so a quick pack of the car made sure that nothing got wet. A bit disapointing on the Sunday as only Graham with Molly, Audrey
with Bel and Wendy turned up although Jim and Maureen from Annan came along later on. Despite the lack of dogs, we were still
busy and more cash was raised. For those who are considering coming along to these events, can we say that they are
an ideal way of promoting the charity and finding homes for these magnificent animals. You don't need to stay all day
(Graham does that) but even if you can spare an hour, we would be delighted to see you. The pictures show various scenes of
the event including one of Simon from Asda who assisted Graham in organising the event. A big thanks to Asda, Simon and porter
Thomas who made the e3vent as profitable as it was. Over £440 was raised over the 2 days.

GALLOWAY COUNTRY FAIR - SAT/SUN 20TH /21ST AUGUST On the Thursday
morning, Graham and Margaret took the DCGR caravan to Drumlanrig (just outside Thornhill and set up the awning and one of
the gazebos. On Friday, they returned early to drop off the second gazebo + the trailer full of stock. Graham stayed on site
to set up the stall while Margaret left to take up her duties in the Charity shop. On the Friday night, there was torrential
rain and things didn't look too good for the Saturday but gues what - Saturday was glorious! We opened the Arena activities
with a greyhound parade and Graham had manage to persuade 29 greyhounds and there owners to take part. It really was an excellent
parade and once finished, the audience were VERY generous with donations. Throughout the day, we had LOADS of people
coming to say hello to the dogs and once more our "Tombola King" Brian, sold every single ticket! Saturday night
was again pretty wet but Emma and Russell, who were staying over on the campsite invited Graham to the Beer Tent and that
helped raise spirits! One downside to the event was that the stalls on either side to DCGR had there awnings sliced open with
a knife but luckily, the DCGR goodies and caravan were left untouched. The Sunday - guess what - warm and dry all day.
Yet again plenty of people came to the stall and admired our dogs including homeless greyhound Dolly, who got lots of cuddles.
Over £860 was raised over the 2 days and quite a few leaflets handed out as well. We were all that busy on the
Saturday that no photographs were taken and it wasn't until late on the Sunday afternoon that Graham remembered to get
the camera out. Pictures show Shadow and Duke giving smiles to the crowd and a shot of the stall area with a few members.
A really good 2 day event for DCGR. Next year, Graham would like to put on a REAL show and as it's our 10th anniversary,
would like 100 greyhounds there!!!!!

DUMFRIES SHOW – ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Towards the end of the Dumfries Show at the
beginning of this month, David Mundell MP popped along to say hello to our dogs and members following a conversation Graham
had with him regarding the number of greyhounds DCGR had homed in our short existence. David was so impressed, he came
along and chatted with those in attendance and informed us what a magnificent job we had done in only 9 years. David
is a keen follower of DCGR and has told us on many occasions (as have other MPs and MSPs) that he will raise any issues we
have in terms of the welfare of ex-racing greyhounds with appropriate authorities. He sends his kind regards to all our members
and encourages us to keep up the good work.
|
|
CROCKETFORD GALA - SUNDAY 14 AUGUST A magnificent turn out of Dumfriesshire
members and greyhounds at Crocketford Gala on Sunday ensured plenty of visitors to our stall on a really warm and sunny day.
Graham counted 16 greyhounds at the peak and they just did their usual greyhound thing - lazed about, got fed treats and enjoyed
lot's of cuddles. The only time they all came alive as one was when a hawk from the falconry display flew low over their
heads and landed on the DCGR gazebo!! We were that busy, that the Tombola ran out of prizes!! Over £100 was raised
and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The picture shows a team photograph including foster dog Tilly who was en-route
to her foster home in Stranraer.

|
DALSTON SHOW - SATURDAY 13 AUGUST Another really muddy field due
to previous rain but thankfully, dry on the day. Dalston Show seemed a little quieter that usual but nevertheless, our greyhounds
certainly attracted attention. At one time Graham counted 17 greyhounds which was a really good turnout. Due to the
rain on the previous 3 days, Graham decided not to take the DCGR caravan and stay over but to drive down early in the morning
and take the trailer with 2 gazebos instead. He arrived at 7am and was met by local member Kevin Hugill who gave him a hand
to set up. Things were extremely muddy but as it was downhill to the stall area, there was no problem. Things soon got
worse and the photograph shows just how bad it was. During the day, Caroline from Craig Robinson Vets presented DCGR with
a cheque for £40 as a result of some fundraising and a personal donation from a vet in the practice shown in a
photograph with Ann Thomson, our Vice Chair, accepting the cheque. Another photgraph is a "team" shot including
young Alex, who was visiting the Showwith his mum and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the greyhounds. The fourthphotograph is of
"shameless" Milly, giving the crowds a laugh. Overall, a really successful day with over £240 going
into the charity's account. At the conclusion of the event, yes you guessed, Graham got stuck in the mud but unlike
the Cumberland Show, there were plenty of burly young men to give him a push to get on his way - thanks guys!!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE STEWARTRY SHOW
Rosemary Gray,
a member from Dumfries, took this picture at the recent Stewartry Show. Our readers will remember that the morning was quite
wet while the afternoon was warm and sunny. The picture taken covertly, shows Margaret Hill having a nap beside new
adopted dog Molly with Sky from Castle Douglas and Poppy at the rear. The legs are those of Graham Hill, our Events
Co-ordinator who wore his kilt especially to win the Best 6 Legs class with Poppy in the dog show!!!

DUMFRIES SHOW - SATURDAY 6TH AUGUST Another day of two halves
but opposite to that of the Stewartry Show on Thursday. The morning at Dumfries was lovely but the afternoon a bit wet! It
didn't however stop the Dumfriesshire public coming out and although seeming a little quieter than last year, our stall
was still a major attraction. At one point, Graham counted 17 greyhounds and even MP's and MSP's visited the stall.
David Mundell MP even arranged for a photographer to come and take a photograph for his regular newsletter especially after
Graham informed him how successful the charity had been (and still is). There was a "special" appearance of Merlin
and Sailor (not in photograph) who had been re-homed that very morning. What a difference from the Cumberland Show! We handed
out a good few leaflets, many, many people stopped to say hello to the dogs, our income was THREE TIMES more than the Cumberland
Show and even although it was raining heavily, Park Farm has a hard surface road right round the showground so no getting
stuck! The income from the Show exceeded £330 and the picture shows some of the greyhounds and owners that attended.

STEWARTRY AGRICULTURAL SHOW - CASTLE DOUGLAS - THURSDAY 4TH AUGUST
You
might call it a day of two halves!! Graham and Margaret with all the gear left their home in Kirkgunzeon at 7.30am during
torrential rain and when they arrived at the Show site, it was exactly the same. Luckily Graham had set up the Gazebo
the night before so Margaret was kept dry setting up the stall. At about 9am, Chris and Brian arrived and promised Graham
that by lunchtime, it would be dry. True to their word - it was! Eventually, we had Poppy, Molly, Sky 1, Harry, Cassie,
Nina, Nellie, Tizzy and Sky 2 on display and they certainly attracted the crowds. Graham entered Poppy in the Dog Show under
classes Best Hound and Best 6 legs (Graham was wearing his kilt) and won 3rd place and 1st place respectively. Margaret entered
Sky 1 in the Waggiest Tail class and got 4th place. Overall, a good day out with approx £90 for DCGR coffers and a couple
of really strong enquiries.

DONATION TO DCGR We are extremely grateful to the Border Dog Training Club from Carlisle
who have kindly donated £500 towards the work we do in saving ex-racing greyhounds. It is encouraging to know
that there are organisations out there who are sympathetic to the work we do and support us either financially or by deeds.
On behalf of DCGR, a big thanks

HELP! Margaret Hill, our member
who runs the charity shop in Lockerbie has a new dilemma. The shop has proved so successful, that she is running out of good
quality items to sell. The best sellers at this time of year are children’s games and toys (working order please),
bric a brac, books and summer clothing (ladies and mens). Without publishing any figures, Margaret would like to inform
members and supporters that in the first 33 weeks of running the shop, it has generated more income than ALL our fundraising
activities in the 2010/2011 financial year. If you have any unwanted goods please get in touch with Margaret at 01387
760577 – she will be delighted to hear from you and the answer machine is always on. Unfortunately we cannot now take
electrical goods and due to the geographical area we cover, we cannot guarantee uplift but nevertheless, if we are going to
an event and we have room in the car or trailer, we can take donations then. Otherwise, why not take a trip to Lockerbie
and have a look at the shop yourself.

PRESIDENTS B.B.Q - WATERBECK - SUNDAY 24 JULY Another glorious
day and a great turn out of members at our now annual Presidents BBQ. Over 65 greyhounds with 105 members basked in the sunshine
and enjoyed the burnt (sorry well done) Cumberland Sausage and Burgers at our President's home in Waterbeck. Members
travelled from as far as Penrith and Dalton in Furness in the south to Biggar in the north and from Stranraer in the west
to Langholm in the east to make this a very successful social gathering. As usual, Graham and Margaret not to miss a fundraising
opportunity, had the DCGR caravan packed with goodies and our sales alone topped £330 with more cash expected once Arthur
has tallied up the rest. The pictures show a "team photograph" and one of Margaret "manning" the stall.
Graham was otherweise engaged with John from Stranraer cooking the burgers. Arthur would like to thank everyone for their
support.

KIRKCUDBRIGHT MEET A GREYHOUND DAY AND HALF MARATHON PRESENTATION What
a difference a week makes! Relaxed situation, sun (no mud), beautiful scenery and plenty of greyhounds made this event a really
nice experience. Graham and Margaret with Poppy and Molly set up about 9.30 and were soon joined by Harry, Sky, Cassie, Nina,
Katie, Tizzy, Nellie, Belle, Shiloh, Honey and Holly and their owners (sorry if anyone was missed). As the Wickerman Festival
was taking place nearby, we had plenty of visitors to our stall and as usual, the greyhounds were the main attraction. Just
after lunchtime, Jordan and Kane from Gatehouse of Fleet (who had run the Kirkcudbright Half Marathon for DCGR) came along
and presented DCGR with £250 with more to come as well as a few donations fron DCGR members themselves. Jordan and Kane
spent a good half hour talking to and cuddling the greyhounds and made a promise that they would think up other ways to raise
funds for the dogs. In comparison to last week, a goodly number of leaflets were handed out to potential adopters and over
£130 raised (all for DCGR funds) was raised on the day. A big thanks to our members for coming along and a big cheer
for Jordan and Kane for their magnificent donation. Picture shows a couple of scenes at the event as well as Margaret and
Julia receiving the cash from Jordan and Kane.

CUMBERLAND SHOW - SATURDAY 16 JULY Miserable and Never Again are
the only words for it. In terms of weather, visitors to the stall and cash raised - MISERABLE!. Graham picked up Margaret
after she had finished at the Charity Shop at 4pm on Friday and drove straight to the racecourse to set up. Luckily, the weather
was ok - just a few light showers, so everything was set for the Saturday. Well all Saturday morning, the rain poured and
you could actually see the pathways turning to mud with the movement of people and vehicles. The weather obviously deterred
people from visiting the show and as our pitch was at the extreme far end of the showground we did not get many visitors.
For the first time in memory, we received no enquiries about re-homing a greyhound and we did not hand out any leaflets! Nevertheless,
a hardy bunch of volunteers turned up to lend a hand and the attached photograph was taken during one of the dry spells.
The pitch itself cost £150 (The Cumberland Show is the only major event we attend that do not give a charity discount)
and we raised £114.40. THIS IS THE FIRST MAJOR EVENT GRAHAM HAS ORGANISED WHICH HAS RESULTED IN A LOSS! There is more.
Graham went to get his car from the trade car park and was met with ankle deep mud. Luckily he got the car back to the caravan
and hitched up and was doing quite well until a couple of revellers wouldn't get out of the way and of course he was stuck-near
to the beer tent. Literally a hundred young strapping lads, drinking their beer had a good laugh at Graham and Margaret but
did they offer to help - NO. Margaret, along with some people (ladies and gents) from a re-enactment group gave the car and
caravan a shove to get us moving and we managed a further 100 yds or so before sinking up to the axles in more mud. An appeal
for help for the organisers resulted in a "Manitou" towing us out of the showground for which DCGR are extremely
grateful. Graham will not be booking this event next year if he is re-elected at the AGM in 2012!

RUSSELL THE RABBIT Many of our supporters and members have contacted
Graham enquiring about "Russell the Rabbit" who makes guest appearances for DCGR at some fundraising events. His
last appearance was at the Kirkcudbright Garden and Country Fair (see previous entry on this page) and he (or is it she??)
helped us raise over £500. Russell the Rabbit's identity must however remain a secret as he or she, is DCGR's
superhero in fundraising terms and his or her identity may jeopardise his or her safety and future fundraising exercises.
Like most superhero's, his alter ego walks amongst us un-noticed but unlike Superman, he (or she) does not require a phone
box to get changed in, but requires the presence of the DCGR caravan to protect his or her anonimity. The only extra-ordinary
powers Russell the Rabbit has is to raise funds for greyhounds and as we do not want him abducted to raise funds for other
charity's, his or her identity must remain top secret - sorry. Attached is one of the few pictures of Russell the Rabbit
in action.

|
KIRKCUDBRIGHT GARDEN AND COUNTRY FAIR - SAT/SUN 9/10 JULY Marvellous
weather, excellent turnout of members and 4 wonderful parades of our dogs ensured that this event was the best of the year
so far. On Saturday, our Dumfries and Galloway members did us proud with 27 greyhounds taking part in the morning and
afternoon parades in front of many interested people. A "special" appearance of our fundraiser, Russell the Rabbit,
generated a lot of laughter expecially when he got "on his marks" and was trying to encourage our couch potatoes
of dogs to chase him. Saturday was extremely busy and Graham's Tombola, ably managed by member Brian Lomas, nearly
ran out of prizes. Sunday was not as busy but over 15 local members turned out to ensure another succesful day. Having said
that and despite raiding the "tombola store" at Kirkgunzeon, we DID run out of prizes and every single one of the
tickets were sold. In addition to all this, at least 3 people confirmed they would be contacting us with a view to adoption,
1 further visitor is extremely interested in fostering and Graham has been offered a job as compere for a "scottish night"
in Kirkcudbright next year where we can bring along some of our greyhounds to promote them as family pets! On the financial
side the event generated over £541 and we are extremely thankful to the organisers for inviting us along. As an
aside, a couple belonging to the Greyhound Awareness Leage were co-opted onto our parade (and they loved it) as well as a
visitor from Northern Ireland with 2 greyhounds, who was holidaying nearby was temporarily adopted by DCGR for the weekend.
A big, big thanks to all our members for ensuring a successful event. The pictures show various scenes from the event including
two members holding a cheque to the value of £100 donated to DCGR by the organisers.

MEET A GREYHOUND DAY - DUMFRIES - SATURDAY 2ND JULY A warm and sunny day met our volunteers
as we set up our information table at the Fountain in Dumfries - so warm in fact that we finished early due to the heat!!
Nevertheless, many residents (and tourists) stopped to say hello and to throw some coins into the charity tins. Apart from
the usual regular volunteers, we had Dora with Fay, Sarah with TJ and Paul from Kirkcudbright along to lend a hand and to
speak to the public. All in all, 11 greyhounds and their owners turned up, spending the day either talking to the public or
eating ice cream!! Quite a few leaflets were handed out and we have one volunteer toassist with Home Visits who will probably
be well utilised by Margaret Hill and/or Ann Thomson. During the time we were there, we raised an incredible £270 which
considering the economic climate, is excellent. A big thanks to all who came on the day. Picture shows most of
the people who attended and Graham apoogises for the quality of the photograph - he needs to get a new camera.

|
SANDHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL SUMMER GALA - SUNDAY 19TH JUNE For the uninitiated, Sandhead
is on the Solway coast to the south of Stranraer and DCGR received a last minute invitation to attend due to one of the organisers
being related to one of our members. We didn't advertise the event on our website as it is a bit far away for most people
but Graham telephoned local members and we had 9 greyhounds on the day. When we arrived, we were asked to do a mini parade
and as Graham had all "the gear", we took to the arena at 2pm. On display were Poppy, Molly, Rocky, Major, Cassie,
Nina, Jasper, Shadow and Sky and didn't the visitors to the gala enjoy them. Over £200 was raised on the day
and 2 or 3 really strong enquiries. Picture shows a "team" photograph with the exception of Sky and owner Pat who
had gone off for a walk. A really nice atmosphere at this event and DCGR are delighted we were invited.

DONATION
TO DCGR The Pets at Home Charitable Foundation has graciously awarded DCGR a donation of £100 towards the work we do in
re homing ex-racing greyhounds. Michelle Watkins, the Foundations Administrator said, “We appreciate you visiting Pets at Home and helping to raise awareness of giving unwanted pets
a second chance of happiness - we hope you enjoyed your time with us and found it to be a valuable experience to promote your
organisation”. This is a marvellous donation which on top of the £300+ we made on the day,
makes this event an excellent fundraiser. DCGR would like to thank Pets at Home for their support and for their kind
donation.

MEET A GREYHOUND DAY - KIRKMAHOE GALA - SUNDAY 12TH
JUNE DCGR had been asked to do a mini greyhound parade at this event and Graham managed to persuade 10 greyhounds
to come along and strut their stuff. We had Poppy, Tiffy, Molly, Shiloh, Honey, Sam, Beth, Cassie, Nina and Sky on parade
and most of the people in attendance came over to the arena to see the dogs. Luckily the weather stayed fine and it wasn't
until we were packing up did the rain actually arrive. These village gala days are a treat to do and the residents invariably
come over to say hello and thank us for coming. Kirkmahoe was no exception and we had a continual trail of people wanting
to say hello to the dogs. Over £100 was raised in the 3 hours we were there and we are very grateful for the invite.

MEET A GREYHOUND DAY - WILKINSONS, CASTLE DOUGLAS - 11TH JUNE The staff at Wilkinsons
gave us a warm welcome when we arrived for our second MAG day at the store. A goodly number of members and their greyhounds
turned up so many in fact that Graham had to position them away from the front entrance as so many people were stopping to
say hello to the dogs they nearly brought the store to a standstill!! It really is heartwarming to see the customers faces
light up as they saw the dogs and the vast majority of people stopped and either talked to the owners or gave a greyhound
a cuddle. One disabled lady in a wheelchair was nearly overcome with delight as each and every one of the dogs wanted to say
hello to her. Over £238 was raised at this event and DCGR would like to thank Wilkinsons for allowing us to collect
much needed cash.

|
MEET A GREYHOUND
DAY/CAN COLLECTION – TESCO ANNAN – 5 JUNE Only Ann with Tiffy and Margaret with Poppy (assisted by guest Jane from Aberdeen
with Fleck) turned up for this event and even although they were in the foyer of Tesco, it was bitter cold. Nonetheless,
they endured the arctic conditions from 10 till 2 (it is June isn’t it) raising nearly £100 in the process. Believe
it or not and in JUNE, the dogs were wearing their winter coats!!! While we very much appreciate the donations received, it is obvious that the economic climate is starting
to bite and it may be our finances this financial year will be heavily subsidised by our charity shop in Lockerbie (see Charity
Shop Diary for more information). It is also obvious that our fundraising strategy may have to be re-assessed to reflect what
is happening in the wider world and your new committee after the AGM will be looking closely at this.
|
|
MEET A GREYHOUND DAY - CASTLE DOUGLAS - 4 JUNE Dry with a little
sun and plenty wind was the weather for our annual Meet a Greyhound Day in Castle Douglas and it was very strange for Graham
to be there and set up without old faithfull Magic who had invariably been at EVERY event the charity has held over the last
9 years. For those who don't know, Magic sadly passed away while Graham and Margaret were on holiday. Anyway, the
event went smoothly - sometimes busy and sometimes quiet. Nevertheless, over £140 was raised during the 5 hours we were
there with the possibility of a home check in the offing. A big thanks to our members and their greys who turned up to promote
the charity. Picture shows our "volunteers" with the exception of Maggie Horan who went off to the shops to spend
Brian's money!!!
|
|
THE THINGS
PEOPLE DO Graham and Margaret recently came back from their annual holiday and believe it or not, were donated some
excellent, quality ladies clothing while away. Their table companions at dinner were from north Wales and whenever Graham
and Margaret are in conversation with anyone, the topic of greyhound rescue ALWAYS comes up. Jenny, the lady in question was
so interested in the charity and in our new charity shop that she said she would donate a few items from her “travelling
wardrobe” at the end of the holiday. These items are now on sale in the shop. A big thanks to Jenny (and Ray)
for their interest in what DCGR is doing in southwest Scotland and northwest England .
|
|
CAN COLLECTION
– MORRISON’S, CARLISLE – 28 MAY Member Audrey Riley from Carlisle was in charge of this event but
it started on a bad note when Audrey fell prior to her attendance and sustained a minor facial injury. Nevertheless Audrey arrived on time and set up DCGR’s table
within the supermarket. Again it appears indicative of the financial climate as not only were the charity tins comparatively
empty, but the supermarket wasn’t that busy either. Audrey was assisted by a couple of friends but sadly only two members,
Trisha and Pauline with Molly and Lady came along to lend support. DCGR are glad they did for the charity tins with the greyhounds
present were substantially fuller than those on the table inside. Audrey and her team raised over £150 and were
are extremely grateful for their help.

MEET A GREYHOUND DAY/CAN COLLECTION – NEWTON STEWART – 28 MAY In the absence
of Graham, member Tracy Rice from Newton Stewart controlled this event which was mostly dry apart from a few showers but was
pretty cold. Tracy and daughter Emily were there from 10 till 12 then more members arrived soon after and a big thanks is
due to the people who did turn up and help and of course to the people who stopped to say hello to the dogs and gave a donation.
DCGR funds increased by over £55 as a result of this event. Thanks also to Tracy for taking on the responsibility of
managing our can collection. Picture show “the Newton Team” on the day.

CREAM O GALLOWAY – 21/22 MAY In the absence of Graham, Chris and Brian controlled this event. Saturday: Lovely welcome by staff including Sue. 15 dogs + members.
Weather occasional showers/sunny periods until 2.30pm, then it poured down and we shut down. Not many customers (must have
been Scottish Cup Final kept a few back).
Sunday: Another great welcome by staff. 10 dogs (6 with Margaret/Mandy,
1 each with Pat Bealey and Maureen Rice, + our 2). Weather “gale”, slight showers, we shut down at 3.30pm. Not
a busy day – sad. Problem was that although we on the coast had blue skies inland was heavy showers, people arrived
in wet cars and were surprised at the change, it must have kept many away but we remained fairly busy with interested parties
for possible homing. Manager Sue turned up on her day off and stayed with us for about 2-3 hours. Over £95 was raised for DCGR over the 2 days.

Meet a Greyhound Day, Saturday & Sunday 14th & 15th May This
two day event was blessed with very changeable weather and was particularly inclement on the Sunday! But despite this members
turned up with their dogs on both days and at one point on the Saturday we had 17 dogs and their owners in attendance!
Over £350 was raised over the two days and just as important there is the possibility of a couple of home checks. Our
thanks go to everyone who braved the elements over the course of the two days to help us raise funds and possible homes for
the dogs. The two pictures were taken on the Saturday, when at least the rain held off until 3.45pm just before we were due
to pack up! Unlike the Sunday when it rained almost all day.

PETS AT HOME DUMFRIES & CARLISLE - SUNDAY 8TH MAY As there
was atrocious weather at the start, Graham with Magic and Ann with Tiffy were apprehensive about which members would turn
up but they shouldn't have worried as very soon, Rosemary and John with Harry, Arthur with Pearl, Chris and Brian with
Cassie and Nina, Pat with Sky and Maggie and Brian with Shiloh and Honey arrived within minutes of setting up. As the day
prgressed, the skies cleared, the rain stopped and the sun came out, encouraging members of the public to come over and say
hello. One bonus was recently homed Dan who arrived with owner and thoroughly enjoyed himself meeting the other dogs. Over
£155 was raised on the day and as a similar amount was raised at Pets at Home in Carlisle, a very successful day indeed.
Picture shows the "regulars" along with Ross from Pets at Home who was incharge of the store on the day.
Sadly no pictures were taken at the Carlisle event, but the rain managed to just about hold off, apart from the odd
drop and over the course of the day a stream of members appeared, did a couple of hours and then left, if we had organised
a rota it couldn't have worked better! Apart from poor Audrey who thought the event started at 10.00am so was there an
hour before anyone else turned up, but still managed to stay for most of the day. Our thanks go to, Sue with Ted and Belle
1, Tracey and Andrew with Rosie, Sandy and Len with Paddy, Trish with Molly, Pauline with Lady, Audrey with Belle 2, Maggie
and Mally with Sooty and Peggy, Allan with Milly and Lulu, Margaret and Mandy with Bob and last but not least, Jenni, Robin
and Hannah with honorary Greyhounds Ebony and Jake!

MEET A GREYHOUND WEEKEND - KIRROUGHTREE FOREST VISITORS CENTRE As
there were no volunteers to control the Meet a Greyhound Day at Penrith on Saturday it was cancelled (Graham will write a
letter of apology to the Council) and it was left to our members in Galloway to show off their greyhounds at our annual Meet
a Greyhound Day at Kirroughtree, just outside Newton Stewart. Over the weekend, we had in excess of 20 greyhounds during the
3 days and although pretty quiet, we still raised over £150 for DCGR funds. The picture shown belies the fact that although
the sun shone and we had no rain, the wind was extreme!! So much so that the DCGR caravan awning (ok it was a few years
old and showing wear) has gone to the big caravan park in the sky - LITERALLY!! This was on the Saturday - it couldn't
get worse could it? Well Yes! On the Sunday, the wind was just as strong and was gusting between 40 and 50 mph. Something
else had to go and it did. 2 sides of the "industrial" gazebo were ripped and a securing plate detached from one
of the legs. Result - gazebo had to come down. Monday was not too bad and we had the sales tables in the open air - luckily
the weather was fine. Hopefully, the rips in the gazebo sides can berepaired and Graham Smith, a member from Stranraer will
weld on the securing plate to the gazebo leg. Unfortunately, the awning is beyond repair so if anyone out there would like
to donate an awning suitable for a 14' caravan, please give Graham a ring at 01387 760577.

CARLISLE MEET A GREYHOUND DAY - 23RD APRIL A VERY large turn
out of greyhounds at our annual Meet a Greyhound Day in Carlisle ensured plenty of people came over to say hello to the dogs.
At one time, Graham counted 26 greyhounds at one specific time and over the 5 hours we were there, a total of 30 greyhounds
were "parading their stuff". Sarah Bunclark, our supporter from the Council was there to meet Graham and Margaret
at 9.30 and from the moment the table was set up, there was a constant flow of people until 3pm when we packed up just as
the rain was arriving. At this moment in time, thewre are a number of strong enquiries on the go and we may even have re-homed
a greyhound already, subject to a home visit of course. Another positive outcome was the number of members who attended
an event for the first time. On speaking the them afterwards, all seemed to enjoy the experience although a little nervous
at the beginning.
The greyhounds were WONDERFUL, lapping up (excuse the pun) all the attention and the doggie
treats given to them by members of the public. The pictures show a "team" photograph (apologies if you had gone
when photograph taken) and a few general shots of the event - oh and by the way, over £640 raised in the 5 hours!!!
A big thanks to all that attended and to Sarah Bunclark and Carlisle City Council for giving permission for the event.

Irish Greyhounds
to China!
DCGR have emailed the Dogs Trust Ireland
giving our support to their campaign to stop the Irish Greyhound Board from continuing with their proposals to send Irish
Greyhounds to China. We will do what we can to help them prevent this from ever taking place. The following is taken from
an article on their website.
"We write as a concerned group of leading animal welfare organisations with
extensive experience of Greyhound welfare, regarding the Irish Greyhound Board's suggested interest in sending Irish Greyhounds
to the People's Republic of China to establish a Greyhound Industry. It is clear that this venture is being pursued with no consideration
for the welfare of Greyhounds. The future of Irish Greyhounds in China would at best be short lived and at worst dire and unthinkable.
The idea of sending Greyhounds to China stands in stark contrast to the letter and spirit of
the recently drafted Welfare of Greyhounds Bill which was finalised by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
following extensive consultation with the Greyhound Industry and the welfare community."

DCGR re-home our 700th dog!
In April, Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound
Rescue re homed its 700th greyhound, Ben, who was our dog of the month for March.
Sue Neale, a DCGR member, has
fostered Ben for the past 3 months at her home in Orton alongside her own 7 rescued greyhounds.
Ben has now been
adopted by Rachael Hogg and her family in Troutbeck, Windemere where he's become an instant best friend to Rachael's
11 year old son, Kain.
"Ben has settled into our home straightaway - he's the most affectionate and placid
animal, and he's lovely with people. Kain and Ben are inseparable - they are just the best of pals"
Well
done everyone!

GOOD NEWS FOR DCGR IN BUDGET In the 2011 budget announced today (23.03.11) the Chancellor announced simplification
of Gift Aid and is changing the rules to allow Gift Aid to be claimed on “small donations” ostensibly cash collected
in Charity Tins. The maximum Gift Aid can be claimed on is £5,000 therefore if DCGR collects that amount of money
at all the Meet a Greyhound Days throughout the forthcoming financial year, we can claim back approx £1000 !!

TALK TO BARONY COLLEGE On Wednesday 23rd March Graham attended at the Barony Agricultural
College near Dumfries to present his “annual” talk to the students of the HNC class in Animal Welfare. Over 20
students listened to Graham extol the virtues of greyhounds as family pets and the work carried out by DCGR in finding homes
for them once they have finished racing. For over an hour, there was active discussion and then Graham brought in Magic and
Poppy to illustrate what he had been talking about. True to form Magic (now 12 ½ ) wandered round the classroom
looking for attention then both he and Poppy lay down for a snooze!! Barony College will be forwarding a donation to
the charity and we thank them in advance for their generosity.

DONATION TO DCGR Margaret Hill, our Treasurer, is continually being amazed by the generosity of supporters of DCGR.
This morning and completely unannounced she received a cheque to the value of £37 from the Land o’ Burns Canine
Club in Kilmarnock to be used in assisting DCGR in the work we do. Donations such as this and when taken together, go a long
way in ensuring that we go from strength to strength. Our charity is financially stable despite the economic climate
and when we realise that in only 9 short years, we have re-homed over 700 greyhounds, it makes it all worthwhile. Having
said that and to continue our good work, DCGR are always looking for volunteers to
help in the charity shop, transport for dogs, fostering, dog walking
in the lovely countryside around Lockerbie, events or even assisting some of the committee members with their
own particular responsibility. Go on, give it a go – more hands
make less work and you never know – you might enjoy it! Give Graham a ring on 01387 760577 or Judy on 01228 674127.

DONATION TO DCGR Following the death last year
of one of our patrons, the comedian Jason Wood, his father Brian, is continuing patronage of DCGR. Following an event to commemorate
the first anniversary of Jason’s death, Brian has forwarded cheques to the value of £631.60 collected in his memory.
Here is an extract from Brian’s letter. “I am
very proud of him (Jason) and will ensure Jason’s patronage to DCGR is fulfilled. Jason left a wonderful legacy
of love for the whole family and all his friends. With Love – Brian” As the administrative centre
for the charity with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, Graham and Margaret will plant a tree at Dunrunnin, Kirkgunzeon
on behalf of the charity and in Jason’s memory. Had he lived, Jason would have been a tremendous ambassador for DCGR but his memory
will live on in a soon to be released CD of some of his favourite songs (apart from being a stand-up comedian, Jason was a
classically trained singer). The CD is being completed by member Carol Kershaw as we speak and all proceeds from it’s
sale will help our charity to continue it’s work in re-homing ex-racing greyhounds. Everyone at DCGR thanks Brian for his continuing
support.

HARRABY
GUIDES SPONSORED WALK DCGR thanks the girls of Harraby Guides for donating £115 to the greyhounds following their
recent “Welsh Adventure”. Last year Graham and Al gave the girls a talk on greyhound rescue and they all agreed
that they would donate sponsor money raised in the “Welsh Adventure” to DCGR. Yet another example of the
generosity of the people of Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria towards the work we do in rescuing greyhounds. Well done
girls!!!

KIRKPATRICK
DURHAM WI On Wednesday 16th February, Graham and Margaret along with Poppy and Magic as well as Ann with
Tiffy, travelled along to the monthly meeting of the Kirkpatrick Durham WI to give the ladies a talk on DCGR. After the “business”
part of the meeting was over, Graham took centre stage while Margaret and Ann set up the sales table. Graham related the history
of DCGR, what we do and how active we are in promoting greyhounds as family pets and at the end, Magic Poppy and Tiffy came
in just to prove how laid back the breed are. Within 5 minutes, all three were on the carpet having a snooze! After
the tea and home baking, Ann was invited to judge a picture competition and thereafter, Graham was presented with a cheque
for DCGR to the value of £20. All in all, a very successful night with the funds of DCGR being increased by over
£50. Unfortunately no pictures as Graham’s camera appears to be heading to the big dark room in the sky.
A big thanks to the ladies for their attention and generosity.

DONATION TO DCGR A big thanks to our Patron, Maddy Prior, for donating £617 towards the work
we do in saving ex-racing greyhounds. Maddy raised the cash by means of a raffle during a small music tour at the end
of last year and for this we are extremely grateful. Graham has invited Maddy along to see our greyhounds and speak
to members at our annual Meet a Greyhound Day in Carlisle on the 23rd of April and if we are lucky and she hasn’t
anything planned, hopefully we will see her then. For the uninitiated, Maddy was part of Steeleye Span in the 1960s
/ 70s and amongst other things, now organises music courses in Cumbria.
